Keeping your home warm

Power prices are going through the roof at the moment, so it is important to have a look at ways we can reduce costs. Keeping your home warm is an expensive business, however we don’t want to freeze either. Here we have made a list of some tips and tricks to stay warm for virtually no cost at all.

Only heat the room you are using

Do you have a home where you tend to sit in the one room only until you go to bed? Many homes these days have combined kitchen, living and dining rooms, so it is key to only heat the room that you are spending the most time in. Gas heaters can be cheaper than electricity, so this can be a good option also if you have a gas point available.

Utilise rooms with sunlight throughout the day

Aim to spend most of your time in areas of the home that have the most sun throughout the day. If you are using a dark and damp room for your office or work space, then think about changing the layout of your home and get working in another room. Perhaps a little table with a laptop could squeeze into a living space to utilise the warmth. There are some stylish and inexpensive options on the market at the moment, so you are sure to find something that will suit your needs.

Soft furnishings

Curtains, cushions, throw rugs and floor rugs are key to keeping the cold out and the warmth inside. Use fabrics that are textural and layered. Natural tones with simple patterns will keep the look relaxed and comforting.

Check for drafts

Sometimes we have done everything and a chill still finds its way inside. Make sure that windows are sealed, and you are using draft stoppers for the breeze that can find its way under the door. This will also help to keep the heat in. You may even be able to turn the heater off when the room is warm enough.

Warm showers and hot drinks

When all else fails have a hot shower and make yourself a hot drink or perhaps a cocktail will do the trick. Wrap yourself up on the lounge with a beautiful blanket and read a book or watch a movie. Nothing says comfort any more than that!
